AWS Certified to Improve the World

So, In 2018, I was able to get AWS certified in both the Developer Associate and Solutions Architect Associate certifications. I felt the test did a decent job of ensuring those who took it have a good overall understanding of the AWS platform from either a development or architectural point of view. I know some people don't feel certifications are worth much (myself included), but it think the AWS exams at least ensure those certified know what the main tools in their offerings are and what they can do. AWS has grown so large over the years that it would be a savant level of person to truly understand all of their offerings in detail, let alone be an expert. However, I believe it tests the kind of knowledge I look for when hiring people. Do you know what tech might be out there, or how to find it?

I really don't care how well someone knows a language, technology or system, but rather do they know how to learn and find answers on their own. Those who can are self starters, and capable of learning anything they put their mind to. They are the ones I want on my team. Because, in the past 20+ years of me working with technology, all of the challenging, rewarding, and important work I can say I have contributed to has come from doing things we didn't know how to do when we started doing it. Whether its cutting edge technologies, new languages or patterns that are evolving, or just trying to find an easier way to do something that's already been done, it's key to be able to find what is already out there so you don't re-invent the wheel. When you find what isn't out there, start building that. Now if along way you found someone made a square wheel, maybe that's a good project to improve upon.

As I look toward the future and how I can apply my knowledge, skills and abilities I continue to look for challenges that might make the world better for people. maybe it helps 10 people, or maybe a million. The value in developing something the makes like easier or better for others has always been my primary goal and reward in life. I have also found that when accomplishing those goals, the money comes along with it. The older I get the more I feel my focus on find places that want to make a difference, instead of wanting to make a buck.

Have you found some cash cow, or way to take someone else's idea to market faster? I'm not interested.

Are you frustrated with the tool available for public services such as schools or fire departments and think there must be a better way? I'm all ears!
